National EAS Test Planned for November 9, 2011
COLUMBIA, MO (November 7, 2011) - The Columbia/Boone County Office of Emergency Management (OEM) advises the public that there will be a nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System (EAS) on Wednesday, November 9, 2011 at 1pm CST. This test will result in messages being relayed to the public via their radio and television.
"This 30-second test is being conducted to assess the reliability and effectiveness of the Emergency Alert System on all levels and identify which areas of the alert process need improvement," says OEM Director Zim Schwartze. "We want everyone to know that this is only a test and there is no reason for the public to worry. When you see or hear the test taking place, know that federal, state and local agencies are taking steps to improve the way the public is alerted of national emergencies."
The national EAS test is being conducted by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) in coordination with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The test will be carried out on radio, television, cable and satellite providers throughout the country, including Columbia and Boone County.
Schwartze advises that the nationwide test being conducted on November 9th is no different from the monthly test that is done on state and local levels. The Office of Emergency Management encourages residents to use the test as a reminder to examine your disaster plans for home, work and on the road. For information on how to prepare for disaster, contact OEM at (573) 874-7400, or log on to the OEM website, www.gocolumbiamo.com/EM.
