Boards and commissions applications are available

COLUMBIA, MO (September 21, 2011) - The Columbia city clerk is accepting applications for boards and commissions. Applications must be received by the clerk's office, 701 E. Broadway, 2nd floor, by noon on Friday, Oct. 7. Applications are available at the clerk's office or on the city's website at www.GoColumbiaMo.com on the City Council page. The following are current boards and commissions openings:  

*The Board of Adjustment has one vacancy with the term to expire Nov. 1, 2016. An alternate member to serve in the absence of a regular member is needed. The member must be a resident of the city of Columbia. The board is responsible for hearing and deciding appeals where it is alleged there is an error in any order, requirement, decision or determination made by an administrative official in the enforcement of the zoning, planning and subdividing ordinances. Monthly meetings are held the second Tuesday at 7 p.m.

*The Board of Mechanical Examiners has two vacancies with terms to expire June 17, 2014. One must be a general contractor not in the HVACR business and one must be a HVACR journeyman mechanic. Both must be residents of the city of Columbia. The board is empowered to give examinations for mechanical heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration licenses and certificates. Monthly meetings are held the second Tuesday at 5 p.m.  

*The Building Construction Codes Commission has five vacancies with terms to expire Aug. 1, 2012, Aug. 1, 2013 and Aug. 1, 2014. One regular and one alternate electrician are needed. One alternate is also needed from each of the following categories: professional engineer (experience in electrical/mechanical), master plumber and fire expert. The commission periodically reviews and makes recommendations relating to building construction codes. Monthly meetings are held the fourth Monday at 4:30 p.m.

*The Citizens Police Review Board has three vacancies with terms to expire Nov. 1, 2014. Members must be residents of Columbia and registered voters and cannot be employed by the city, be a party to any pending litigation against the city, be an elected public office holder or be a candidate for elected public office. Members should reflect the cultural and racial diversity of Columbia and have no serious criminal record. A criminal history of applicants of this board will be conducted and the City Council will be advised of any convictions for violations of federal, state or local law. The board reviews appeals from the police chief's decisions on alleged police misconduct, hosts public meetings and educational programs for residentsand police officers and reviews and makes recommendations on police policies, procedures and training. Meetings are held the second Wednesday of the month at 7 p.m. 

*The Columbia Community Development Commission has three vacancies with terms to expire Nov. 1, 2014. One member each is needed from Ward 1, Ward 5 and Ward 6. All must be qualified voters of the city and shall not serve on the board of directors or be employed by any agency which applies for funding through the commission or which receives funding upon recommendation of the commission. The commission acts in an advisory capacity in all matters pertaining to community development. Monthly meetings are held on call. 

*The Columbia Vision Commission has one vacancy with the term to expire Dec. 15, 2013, for the coordinating committee. The member must be a resident of Boone County, not residing within the city limits of Columbia, and must have demonstrated a commitment to the visioning process. Candidates will be evaluated on the ability to work with data and understand systematic relationships, the ability to work collaboratively, management skills, independence, existing memberships or positions and contributions to the diversity of the commission. The commission tracks, monitors and assists with the implementation of the visioning process. Meetings are held the last Monday of the month at 5:30 p.m.

*The Comprehensive Plan Task Force has one vacancy. Consideration willbe given to prior involvement in the visioning process, service on a city commission, professional credentials or participation in a civic, business or professional organization. The task force advises and assists the Planning and Zoning Commission and City Council on all phases of the comprehensive plan development, including citizen involvement, public education and outreach, recruitment of volunteers and review of interim products. Meetings are held the second and fourth Wednesdays of the month from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

*The Cultural Affairs Commission has four vacancies with terms to expire Oct. 31, 2014. One member must be from a business or professional office in the Special Business District and one must be a layperson with no specialized knowledge in the arts. Members shall not serve on the board of directors or be employed by any agency which applies for funding through the commission or which receives funding upon recommendation of the commission. The commission advises the Council in all matters pertaining to the arts and cultural environment of the city. Monthly meetings are held the second Monday at 4:15 p.m. 

*The Environment and Energy Commission has one vacancy with the term to expire June 1, 2013. The member must be a qualified voter of the city and should have knowledge in matters pertaining to the environment. The commission serves in an advisory capacity for all matters pertaining to environmental protection and conservation. Monthly meetings are held the fourth Tuesday at 7 p.m. 

*The Historic Preservation Commission has one vacancy with the term to expire Sept. 1, 2013. The member must have an interest in historic preservation and represent disciplines such as architecture, design, law, real estate appraisal, construction/general contracting or be a layperson active in historic preservation. The commission makes recommendations to the Council regarding historically significant structures. Monthly meetings are held the first Tuesday at 7 p.m. 

*The Internet Citizens Advisory Group has one vacancy with the term to expire Oct. 15, 2014. Members assess the user-friendliness and effectiveness of the city's Internet activities. The group makes recommendations to staff and Council on resource priority for the city's effective utilization of the Internet. Meetings are held every other month on the fourth Tuesday at 5 p.m.

*The Substance Abuse Advisory Commission has three vacancies with terms to expire Oct. 31, 2014. One member must be a student under age 25, one shall be a healthcare professional and all shall have demonstrated interest in and concern for substance and alcohol abuse programs in the community. The commission promotes coordination of programs intended to prevent and eliminate alcohol and substance abuse. Monthly meetings are held the second Wednesday at 12 p.m.
