OEM Director: Severe Weather Still a Threat
COLUMBIA, MO (September 28, 2011) - As we enter into fall, the Columbia/Boone County Office of Emergency Management (OEM) reminds residents that the new season does not mean we have seen an end to the potential of severe weather. Severe weather and even tornadoes can strike at any time of year.
"Severe weather and tornadoes do not abide by the calendar," says OEM Director Zim Schwartze. "In the past, we've seen damaging storms strike outside of the typical spring and summer months. In fact, one of the more devastating storms to hit Columbia took place in November of 1998 when an F-3 tornado touched down in the Southridge Subdivision. Over 250 homes and businesses in southwest Columbia were damaged or destroyed and 16 people were injured. No matter what time of year, we all need to be prepared for severe weather."
Being prepared for heavy rainfall and flooding is also important this time of year. "The heaviest rains and most significant flooding are more common in the spring but the fall season can see its share of floods that threaten lives and property," says Schwartze. "All over Boone County, there are low-water crossings which are susceptible to flooding. It cannot be stressed enough that motorists who approach water covered roadways are urged to find another route of travel."
Schwartze stresses the importance of being tuned to local media and a NOAA whenever a severe weather watch or warning has been issued by the National Weather Service (NWS). Residents are also reminded not to take watches or warnings lightly and remain alert to rapidly-changing weather conditions. Most of all, remember to act and take shelter when the county's over 80 outdoor warning sirens are activated.
The Office of Emergency Management has several materials available, concerning how to prepare for tornadoes and other natural disasters. Those materials can be obtained by contacting our office, or logging on to the OEM website, www.showmeboone.com/OEM/closures.htm
