USDA to fund seasonal farmers market transit route
COLUMBIA, MO (April 2, 2012) - The city of Columbia Public Works Department announces that beginning this Saturday, April 7, a new seasonal route will run to the Columbia Farmers Market. The route is funded completely by a $4,800 grant from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).
Columbia Transit will provide transportation services via a route traversing core areas of the community, some that are declared a "food desert" by the USDA, to the Saturday morning Farmers Market at the Activity and Recreation Center. According to the USDA, food deserts are defined as urban neighborhoods without ready access to fresh, healthy and affordable food.
This bus begins at 7:45 a.m. at Rollins and Maryland Avenue on the MU campus and will run on 30-minute cycles throughout the morning, with the final departure from the Columbia Farmers Market at 11:45 a.m. The Farmers Market route will operate on Saturdays only from April 7 through Oct. 27, 2012. For a complete map and schedule visit the city's website at www.GoColumbiaMo.com/PublicWorks/Transportation/documents/farmersmarketroute.pdf or call the Wabash Station at (573) 874-7282.
