Earth Hour sheds electric load by two megawatts
COLUMBIA, MO (April 3, 2012) - Columbia residents turned off lights and reduced electric consumption last Saturday night during the annual Earth Hour event. Columbia Water & Light estimates that the electric load from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. on March 31, 2012 resulted in a two megawatt drop in Columbia's electric consumption. The worldwide event is held each year to increase knowledge about saving energy and avoiding greenhouse gas emissions.
The electric consumption for this period over the years was evaluated by Columbia Water & Light staff. Temperature was also considered in making the estimate for this year's electric load reduction during Earth Hour. The two megawatts of electricity is equivalent to the amount of power used by almost 80 Columbia homes in an average day. Past reductions in the electric load were as follows:
*2011 - 2.5 megawatt reduction
*2010 - 1.58 megawatt reduction
*2009 - 1.27 megawatt reduction
*2008 - 1.72 megawatt reduction
