Woman Rescued From Car over Embankment

COLUMBIA, MO (April 12, 2012) - At 10:39 a.m. today the Columbia Fire Department responded to a reported auto accident involving extrication at 1506 Chapel Hill Road. The 9-1-1 caller stated that a vehicle had driven over a cliff bordering the parking lot at 1506 Chapel Hill Road.

Columbia Fire units arrived on the scene to find a red Toyota passenger vehicle approximately 35 feet down a steep, tree and brush covered embankment. The vehicle came to rest against a tree large enough to prevent it from falling the remaining 75 feet to level ground below.

Columbia fire fighters stabilized the vehicle with a steel cable while removing the driver from the automobile. The victim was placed in a stretcher, especially designed for rescue over rough terrain, and fire fighters used rescue ropes to bring her to the top of the steep embankment.

The 74-year-old female driver was the only occupant of the vehicle and she declined medical treatment. The victim told fire fighters she was wearing her seat belt. The rescue involved three fire apparatus and 13 personnel. The rescue was completed in 30 minutes.

The Columbia Fire Department reminds all residents that seat belts save lives. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, buckling up is the single most effective thing you can do to protect yourself in a crash.

The Columbia Police Department is investigating what caused the accident.
