Extrication Accident Sends One to Hospital
COLUMBIA, MO (August 1, 2012) - At 10:16 a.m. today Columbia Firefighters responded to a reported car accident at the intersection of Rainforest Parkway and Jungle Tree Drive. The 9-1-1 caller reported that the driver of one of the vehicles was trapped in the wreckage.
Firefighters arrived on the scene within three minutes and found two passenger vehicles involved, one blocking the roadway and the other on the sidewalk. The adult male driver of the vehicle in the roadway appeared uninjured and declined medical evaluation. Damage to the vehicle on the sidewalk was significant and firefighters had to use hydraulic cutting tools to cut away part of the car and safely remove the adult female driver. The extrication was completed in approximately fifteen minutes. She was transported to University Hospital with potentially moderate injuries. Both drivers were believed to be wearing their seatbelts at the time of the crash.
Two fire engines, a rescue squad, and an ambulance responded to the call. Rainforest Parkway was shut down between Jungle Tree Drive and Iguana Drive for approximately thirty minutes while crews worked at the scene.
The Columbia Fire Department reminds all residents that seat belts save lives. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, buckling up is the single most effective thing you can do to protect yourself in a crash.
