City government phone outage scheduled tonight

COLUMBIA, MO (August 17, 2012) - The City of Columbia has a scheduled phone outage from midnight, Friday, Aug. 17, through 6 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 18.

The outage will not affect essential phone service including:

*9-1-1

*Non-emergency public safety dispatch 442-6131

*Water and Light emergency 875-2555

All other city government numbers will be unavailable during this time, including City Hall, Police, Fire Administration and fire stations, Columbia/Boone County Public Health and Human Services, Parks Administration, the ARC and Parks Management, as well as the power plant and outlying buildings. All departments with 24-hour operations have emergency communication protocols in place.  

According to Bob Simms, director of Information Technologies, the project was timed to minimize customer impact while maximizing the availability of tech support through CenturyLink. "This is a phone system upgrade we've been planning with CenturyLink for some time," Simms said. "Now that we have the outage scheduled, we can begin the process of expanding our phone system to meet the needs of our customers."
