Afternoon Fire in the Cascades Displaces Local Columbia Family

On 08/24/2012, members of the Columbia Fire Department and the Boone County Fire District were dispatched at 4:23 pm to a reported residential structure fire at 7004 Stanwood Drive, in the Cascades subdivision.

Upon their arrival, at 4:31 pm, crews reported smoke and flames from the rear of the structure with approximately 50% of the structure involved. The also reported a natural cover fire burning behind the home. There were 26 Fire Fighters on the scene between the two agencies that responded. The large aerial master stream from Quint 7 was used to extinguish the fire that had burned through the roof and hand lines were deployed to protect the houses on both sides of the target address. The fire was under control in approximately 30 minutes with crews remaining on the scene to conduct overhaul (search for hidden fire) and to investigate the origin and cause of the fire

It was reported that neither the owners, Joel and Debbie Shenker or their two children, were at home at the time of the fire; however, their two family dogs were inside. It was later learned that a neighbor had entered the home and retrieved the dogs prior to the arrival of the fire department.

Assistant Fire Marshal Shawn McCollom is the lead investigator on the fire and has determined the fire started on the deck at the rear of the structure. The cause of the fire is undetermined at this time but remains under investigation. A preliminary damage estimate of $300,000.00 has also been issued by AFM McCollom.  There were no reported injuries as a result of this fire.

The Columbia Fire Department wants to remind residents that working smoke alarms do save lives. Test your smoke alarms at least once a month by pressing the test button. Replace smoke alarm batteries at least once a year. Replace smoke alarms every 10 years. To ensure adequate protection, place smoke alarms in every sleeping room, and in a common area on every floor. If you cannot afford a smoke alarm, call the Columbia Fire Department at 573-874-7556 to schedule an appointment to have free smoke alarms installed. For residences who need assistance in checking their smoke alarms, they can also contact the Columbia Fire Department.
