Columbia Fire Department Urges Caution on Winter Roads

COLUMBIA, MO (December 19, 2012) - With a chance of measurable snow in the forecast, the Columbia Fire Department wants to remind residents to use caution when driving in winter weather.  "Historically, on the day of the first significant snowfall in Columbia, our call volume increases significantly due to automobile accidents" said Columbia Fire Captain John Metz. "This is especially true when the precipitation occurs during morning or evening rush hour" Metz said. Even at temperatures above freezing, bridges and overpasses may be ice-covered and slick. Drivers are urged to use additional caution when driving on wet, icy, or snowy roads.

The Columbia Fire Department offers the following winter driving tips:

Winterize your car: Make sure your car is in good working order.  Check all fluid levels and make sure you have enough windshield de-icer fluid. Make sure your tires are properly inflated and have adequate tread depth. Carry an emergency kit that includes a snow and ice scraper.

Drive safely on winter roads: If you don't have to travel when the weather is bad, don't! Wait until the snowplows have had a chance to clear the roads. Slow down and give yourself plenty of room to stop. Increase the space between you and the vehicle ahead of you. Keep your headlights and windshield clear of snow and ice. Never drive when frost or ice on your windshield obscures your vision.

The Columbia Fire Department reminds drivers and passengers alike, seat belts save lives. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, buckling up is the single most effective thing you can do to protect yourself in a crash.
