Local Columbia Hotels and Motels Work Hard Towards Code Compliance
COLUMBIA, MO (December 19, 2012) -
The Columbia Fire Department announces a successful conclusion to a yearlong project with local hotels and motels to reach fire code compliance. Fire Chief Chuck Witt stated 'The level of cooperation between local hotel owners has been outstanding.'
The 2009 International Fire Code adopted by the City of Columbia requires hotels and motels more than three stories tall or with more than 20 sleeping units to have a monitored, manual fire alarm system that activates an occupant notification system. Manual, monitored fire alarm boxes located in the path of egress and close to exits provide early notification to occupants and first responders in the event of a fire emergency.
'We met with the property owners, discussed the code requirements and established a time frame to achieve compliance. Our experience with each business was positive and productive, they really stepped up to the plate' stated Battalion Chief Brad Fraizer.
The Columbia Fire Department reminds citizens that smoke alarms save lives. Test your smoke alarms at least once a month by pressing the test button. Replace smoke alarm batteries at least once a year. Replace smoke alarms every ten years. To ensure adequate protection, place smoke alarms in every sleeping room and in a common area on every floor. If you cannot afford a smoke alarm
please call the Columbia Fire Department at 573-874-7556 to schedule an appointment to have a free smoke alarm installed. Residents that need assistance checking their smoke alarms can also contact the Columbia Fire Department.
