**UPDATE**Fire Damages Apartment

COLUMBIA, MO (December 27, 2012) - The Columbia Fire Department was dispatched to a commercial structure fire at 1600 Hanover Boulevard, Hanover Village Apartments, unit 4D at 10:24pm on Wednesday, December 26.   911 callers stated a grease fire had spread to the stove itself.

Columbia firefighters arrived on the scene at 10:29pm and observed smoke coming from the address.  Fire crews deployed a pre-connected hoseline, entered through the front door and encountered fire and smoke in the kitchen.  The incident was brought under control quickly.  The fire was contained to the kitchen.   Fire crews spent an additional hour overhauling the damage and checking for fire extension.   Occupants of the home made it out safely with no injuries.

Columbia Fire Investigator Lieutenant Brian Davison estimates damages at $10,000.  The cause of the fire is unattended cooking.  There were several working smoke alarms in the home at the time of the event.

Three fire engines, a ladder and a rescue squad responded to the fire.

The Columbia Fire Department wants to remind residents that working smoke alarms do save lives. Test your smoke alarms at least once a month by pressing the test button. Replace smoke alarm batteries at least once a year. Replace smoke alarms every 10 years. To ensure adequate protection, place smoke alarms in every sleeping room, and in a common area on every floor. If you cannot afford a smoke alarm, call the Columbia Fire Department at 573-874-7556 to schedule an appointment to have free smoke alarms installed. For residences who need assistance in checking their smoke alarms, they can also contact the Columbia Fire Department.
