Parks volunteer programs start later this month

COLUMBIA, MO (February 8, 2012) - Columbia residents have two upcoming opportunities to volunteer for programs in city parks. The TreeKeepers class will be held Feb. 21, Feb. 23 and Feb. 25; CARP - the Columbia Aquatic Restoration Project - classes will be held March 12, March 19 and March 21.

TreeKeepers attend a three-session course in tree management, including information on identification, planting, pruning, diseases and tree pests. The 2012 course will be held on Tuesday evening, Feb. 21, Thursday evening, Feb. 23, and Saturday morning, Feb. 25 at the ARC, 1701 West Ash St. The course is taught by staff from the City of Columbia, the Missouri Department of Conservation and faculty at the University of Missouri.

In exchange for the educational component of the program, participants are required to volunteer 36 hours working on tree projects in city parks, along trails, at the city nursery and along city rights of way.

Classes for CARP will be held the evenings of Monday, March 12, Monday, March 19, and Wednesday, March 21, also at the ARC. Participants learn about aquatic ecology and aquatic plants. Following the class, volunteers are asked to share 18 hours of service on projects in city parks along streams and lakes and in rain gardens.

For more information on either program, contact the City of Columbia's Volunteer Programs at 874-7499 or email volunteer at GoColumbiaMo.com. Details are also available on the city's website at www.GoColumbiaMo.com.
