Cookingf Fire Damages Unoccupied Side of Columbia Duplex

COLUMBIA, MO (January 28, 2012) - For Immediate Release:

Cooking Fire Damages Unoccupied Side of Columbia Duplex

Columbia Fire Fighters were called at 6:20 pm on Saturday, January 28, 2012, to 1006 Hardin St, for a residential structure fire.

Upon their arrival crews reported nothing showing but as they walked around the structure they could hear a smoke detector sounding. Crews forced the door and found smoke banked down to knee level in the unoccupied half of the duplex. Further investigation revealed a fire had occurred on the stove and had damaged the stove, walls and cabinets above the stove. It appeared that the fire had gone out prior to the arrival of fire crews. Crews then used a large fan to evacuate the smoke from the structure so the investigator could examine the fire scene.

Assistant Fire Marshal Tim Bach investigated the fire and stated the cause of the fire was unattended cooking. The duplex is owned by Newton Riley of Columbia and he stated that they had just finished cleaning and painting that side of the duplex a week or so ago. There were no injuries associated with this fire and AFM Bach issued a preliminary damage estimate of $ 5,000.00.

The Columbia Fire Department wants to remind residents that working smoke alarms do save lives. Test your smoke alarms at least once a month by pressing the test button. Replace smoke alarm batteries at least once a year. Replace smoke alarms every 10 years. To ensure adequate protection, place smoke alarms in every sleeping room, and in a common area on every floor. If you can not afford a smoke alarm, call the Columbia Fire Department at 573-874-7556 to schedule an appointment to have free smoke alarms installed. For residences who need assistance in checking their smoke alarms, they can also contact the Columbia Fire Department.
