Evening Fire on Roof of Gas Turbine Building at the Municipal Power Plant

COLUMBIA, MO (July 7, 2012) - Evening Fire on Roof of Gas Turbine Building at the Municipal Power Plant

 

Columbia Fire Fighters were called at 8:15 pm on Saturday, July 7, 2012, to 1501 Business Loop 70 E, for a reported commercial structure fire.

 

Upon their arrival, at 8:19 crews found heavy smoke on the roof of the gas turbine building. Further investigation revealed fire under the roof materials around the exhaust stack of the turbine. Crews using gas powered saws and hand tools, removed portions of the metal roofing materials and extinguished the wooden structural members within the roof system that had ignited. The fire was confined to the area around the exhaust stack and did not affect the gas turbine. The gas turbine was not operating at the time of the fire.

 

Assistant Fire Marshal Shawn McCollom investigated the fire and determined the cause of the fire to be the ignition of the combustible roof members near the exhaust stack. He also issued a damage estimate of $ 10,000.00. There were no injuries as a result of this fire.
