Early Morning Fire Damages Central City Residence

COLUMBIA, MO (June 4, 2012) - The Columbia Fire Department responded to a report of a residential structure fire at 1:30 am on Monday, June 4, 2012 at 601 Hardin Street. The residents of the home were awakened to a loud "poping" noise and the smoke alarms sounding. 

Fire fighters arrived and found light to moderate smoke in the house and traced the source to the basement area. The small fire was extinguished within several minutes and fire fighters used vans to vent the smoke from the home. 

Due to a large amount of stored materials in the basement area, fire fighters were on the scene for several hours checking for hidden fire and ensuring the fire was out. 

This fire shows that working smoke alarms can and do save lives. Smoke alarms sounded early in the fire and allowed the residents to escape the house easily and through normal means.

Fire investigators are still working on a cause for the fire. The fire originated in the basement area.  Damage estimates to the structure and contents are preliminarily set at $20,000.00. 

The residents of the home are staying with local relatives until the damage can be repaired.
