Rollover Crash Injures One
COLUMBIA, MO (June 15, 2012) - Just after 9:00 a.m. this morning the Columbia Fire Department responded to a reported auto accident involving a vehicle that had rolled over near the intersection of I-70 Drive Northwest and Barnwood Drive in west Columbia. As Columbia Fire crews responded, several 9-1-1 callers reported that the driver was trapped in the vehicle.
Columbia Fire crews arrived on the scene to find a silver Toyota Yaris on its side in a drainage ditch. Fire fighters made contact with the only occupant of the vehicle, an 84-year-old female, and began emergency care while other fire fighters used support struts to stabilize the vehicle. It took approximately fifteen minutes to remove the victim from the wreckage. The driver stated she was wearing her seatbelt. She was transported by ambulance to University Hospital.
Two fire engines and a rescue squad responded to the crash.
The Columbia Fire Department reminds all residents that seat belts save lives. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, buckling up is the single most effective thing you can do to protect yourself in a crash.
