Attic Fire Damages Commercial Building

COLUMBIA, MO (June 26, 2012) - At 6:53 p.m. on Tuesday, June 26, 2012 the Columbia Fire Department responded to a water-flow alarm at 2001 Corona Street, the Market Street Building in the Village of Cherry Hill.

The fire engine from Fire Station 6 on Chapel Hill arrived on the scene within four minutes and found water flowing from the three-story building and the strong smell of smoke present. Fire fighters on the scene immediately requested that additional fire units respond, as it appeared they had an active fire.

Fire fighters searched the building for the fire and within 15 minutes located and extinguished a fire in the attic space between the third-floor ceiling and the roof of the building. A fire sprinkler had also activated in the room below the fire.

Fire damage was contained to the ceiling and attic space immediately above the approximately 10' x10' room of an unoccupied third-floor office suite.  There was moderate water damage to the third and second floor area below the affected office suite. The building houses eight separate businesses.

Direct fire loss damage is estimated at $12,000. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. There were no injuries. Seven fire trucks responded to the fire. Fire crews remained on the scene for approximately two hours. Because of the fire and water damage, the electricity to the building was turned off pending an evaluation by an electrician.
