Garage Fire Damages South Columbia Home - Update

COLUMBIA, MO (June 27, 2012) - At 10:17 a.m. today the Columbia Fire Department responded back to the residence at 4301 Vermont Court after the homeowner noticed smoke coming from the roof of his home. Fire crews had been to the home in the morning and extinguished a fire in the home's garage approximately three hours earlier.

Fire fighters arrived on the scene and encountered heavy smoke in the attic and fire along the roof's ridgeline. Fire fighters attacked the attic fire with hand lines and then, because of the instability of the roof, with aerial ladder hose streams. The roof of the home sustained significant fire damage but crews were able to control the fire in about twenty minutes. Much of the house sustained water and smoke damage.

Just after fire crews arrived, the incident commander requested a second alarm be dispatched. This brought three more fire engines in addition to the five already on the scene. The additional personnel were needed because of the size of the home and the hot outside temperatures.

Fire investigators from the Columbia Fire Department and the Boone County Fire District are working to determine the cause of the fire and it remains under investigation.  A dollar loss amount is not yet available. There were no injuries.
