Battery Fails in City Back-up Generator Room

COLUMBIA, MO (March 30, 2012) - For Immediate Release:

Battery Fails in City Back-up Generator Room

 

Columbia Fire Fighters were called at 08:04 am on Friday, March 30, 2012, to 17 N 7th Street, for a reported commercial structure fire. While en-route crews were informed there was smoke coming from the generator room that provides back-up power for PSJC (Public Service Joint Communications) and the Columbia Police Department.  The smoke had been discovered when the generator failed to start during a routine test.

 

Upon their arrival, at 08:07, crews reported a battery next to the generator had failed, discharging battery acid over nearby equipment and storage. Members of the Columbia Fire Department HazMat Team donned protective clothing, entered the room, and neutralized the acid on the fixed equipment and the floor. Those items that could be removed were taken outside to be decontaminated.

 

Prior to the arrival of the Fire Department two city employees were investigating the generator malfunction and were exposed to the smoke and fumes from the battery failure. These employees are currently being medically evaluated. At the present time there is no cause attributed to the battery failure and there has been no damage estimate issued for the repair or cleanup of the effected materials.
