Fire Destroys Box Trailer; Damages Warehouse

COLUMBIA, MO (May 21, 2012) - At 3:28 p.m. Monday afternoon, fire crews from the Columbia Fire Department responded to a reported vehicle fire threatening a structure at 1711 Paris Road in Columbia. Several people called 9-1-1 to report there was a tractor-trailer on fire next to the building at 1711 Paris Road.

Fire Crews from downtown Station #1 arrived on the scene in less than three minutes and found a 53' box trailer backed into a loading dock on the west side of a large commercial warehouse. Smoke and flames were coming from the rear of the trailer and the loading dock roll-up door. Fire crews determined that the fire was located in the box trailer and worked quickly to prevent the fire from extending into the 116,000 square foot warehouse complex.

Fire fighters used a hose line and the piercing nozzle of the Department's Snozzle truck to contain the fire in the box trailer. The piercing nozzle can easily penetrate the metal walls of a box trailer and distribute water throughout the container. The trailer was loaded with approximately 20 tons of large paper bales destined for recycling.

Because the bales of paper were so tightly packed, the fire in the bales continued to smolder. Shortly before 5:30 p.m. the decision was made to transport the box trailer unit to the Columbia Sanitary Landfill where the fire damaged trailer could be opened to expose and completely extinguish the still smoldering paper bales. Columbia Public Works employees and fire fighters remained at the landfill for approximately one hour.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. The 1996 box trailer was a total loss and fire damage to the warehouse structure is estimated at $5000. There were no injuries.
