Fire Damages Exterior of Duplex

COLUMBIA, MO (May 23, 2012) - Just before 4:00 p.m. Wednesday, the Columbia Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire in a duplex at 4004 Imperial Court, located in northeast Columbia.

Firefighters arrived on the scene to find a two-story duplex with fire on the exterior of Apartment B. Firefighters used a single hose line to quickly extinguish the fire.

Fire damage was mostly contained to the siding, insulation and some of the structural lumber on the duplex's exterior kitchen and upstairs bedroom wall. The interior of the apartment sustained light smoke damage.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. Damage to the duplex is estimated at $10,000. Eighteen Columbia Firefighters and five fire trucks responded to the blaze. There were no injuries.

The Columbia Fire Department wants to remind residents that working smoke alarms do save lives. Test your smoke alarms at least once a month by pressing the test button. Replace smoke alarm batteries at least once a year. Replace smoke alarms every 10 years. To ensure adequate protection, place smoke alarms in every sleeping room, and in a common area on every floor.
