Two Alarm Fire At Business Loop Auto Parts Store

COLUMBIA, MO (November 1, 2012) - At 9:11 p.m. Wednesday evening, the Columbia Fire Department responded to a reported commercial structure fire at 14 Business Loop 70 East. The 9-1-1 caller reported fire and smoke coming from the back of Champion Auto Parts.

Columbia firefighters arrived on the scene at 9:15 p.m. and found heavy smoke and fire coming from the back of the business.  Firefighters forced entry through the back door of Champion Auto Parts and began an aggressive attack.  Fourteen minutes into the event, the incident commander upgraded to a 'second alarm', requesting four additional units respond to the scene.

Firefighters worked from the front and back of the building as well as the roof and were succesfull in keeping the fire contained to the auto parts store.  The situation was brought under control after thirty minutes of fire fighting operations.  Fire crews spent an additional two hours overhauling the damage, removing burned ceiling drywall and charred insulation.

Two Columbia Fire Investigators have been assigned to the fire cause and origin investigation.  Lt. Brian Davison determined the area of origin to be a machine shop / store room on the south side of Champion Auto Parts.  The cause of the fire is still under investigation. 

While fire damage was contained to Champion Auto Parts there was minor smoke damage to adjacent buisinesses.  There were no injuries. 

Six fire engines, a ladder, a rescue squad and an air supply vehicle responded to the fire.
