Flu Vaccine Availability

COLUMBIA, MO (November 20, 2012) -

Children and adults who still need their annual flu vaccine can do so this week at the Columbia/Boone County Department of Public Health and Human Services, 1005 West Worley in Columbia. The department's clinic will be open tomorrow, Wednesday, November 21st and Friday, November 23rd from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each day. No appointment is needed. Flu vaccine will continue to be offered throughout flu season and normal business hours of Monday - Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. will resume on Monday, November 26th.

Health officials know that people who are vaccinated are less likely to get the flu, which is why Public Health and Human Services recommends that everyone over six months old get the flu vaccine every year. This fall, department nurses have already given over 10,000 flu vaccinations, including approximately 7,300 to children, who received the vaccine FREE thanks to generous community support from University of Missouri Children's Hospital, the David B. Lichtenstein Foundation, Boone Electric Community Trust and Boonslick Kiwanis Club of Columbia.

Children age 18 and under can get the flu shot or FluMist® FREE of charge. For adults age 19 and older, the flu shot is available for $25. FluMist® is available for $30. FluMist is approved for healthy people between the ages of 2 and 49 who are not pregnant.

In addition to getting the flu vaccine every year, the health department recommends these healthy practices:

*     Avoid close contact with people who are sick

*     Stay home from school or work when you are sick

*     Cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze (with your elbow or a tissue, NOT with your hand!)

*     Wash your hands frequently with soap and warm water or an alcohol-based hand sanitizer
