25th anniversary celebration for the COLT Railroad

COLUMBIA, MO (October 1, 2012) - On October 2, 1987, the City of Columbia purchased the short line railroad that runs from Centralia to Columbia. There will be a ceremony for the 25th anniversary tomorrow from 10:00 a.m. to noon at the COLT Transload facility located at 6501 North Brown Station Road. There will be a short ceremony followed by a free ride on the dinner train for invited guests and the media.

In the early 1980's, NorfolkSouthern announced that it planned to discontinue rail service on the spur from Centralia to Columbia, and no other private businesses were interested in continuing the line. Concerned about what the lack of rail service would mean for Columbia's future, the City of Columbia stepped in and purchased the rail line on October 2, 1987, naming it the Columbia Terminal or COLT. Under the management of Columbia Water & Light, the COLT became an increasingly popular way to ship materials for businesses in the region.

Twenty-five years later, the COLT Railroad is thriving and growing. Traffic has increased from over 600 cars in 1988 to over 2,000 cars in recent years. The rail line offers reliable, energy-efficient, cost-competitive transportation services for a myriad of goods.

Directions to the event:

*From Columbia, go north of Paris Road/Route B.

*From Highway 63 take the Route B exit towards Hallsville/Centralia.

*After the Highway 63 interchange, keep going north on ParisRoad/Route B for 2.2 more miles. The right lane eventually becomes a turn lane for North Brown Station Road.

*Turn right on North Brown Station Road.

*The Columbia Transload facility is located on the left at 6501 N. Brown Station Road.
