Columbia Public Works Solid Waste Division Hosts Open House

COLUMBIA, MO (October 10, 2012) - Ever wonder where that bag of trash or recycling goes after you set it out at the curb or take it to one of the drop off locations? Do you know how your trash can help power homes and businesses inColumbiaor how waste materials are turned into compost and mulch? 

To highlight the Material Recovery Facility's 10th year of operation, we're planning an open house to show you! 

On Saturday, October 20 from 10:00 am to 12 noon, please join us at the landfill, Material Recovery Facility (MRF), and Bio Energy Plant at 5700 Peabody Road as our staff, with some assistance from Water and Light staff, explains, "... how it all works!"  

Learn how a modern landfill takes in materials, converts trash and yard waste into energy which powers Columbia homes and businesses, and how the MRF sorts through recycling and markets the recycled material. You can even purchase "Columbia's Own" compost and mulch for use on your fall garden. Bring your pickup - 1 cubic yard is $12 + tax.  

At 10:00 am, the Volunteer program will sponsor a "Backyard Composting Workshop" to learn how you can make your own compost at home. The workshop will be held near the compost area at the landfill. In the event of rain, the workshop will be held indoors at theLandfillOperationsCenter.   

Put on a jacket, wear some sturdy shoes, come out and talk trash and get your hands into some compost during the Columbia Public Works Solid Waste Open House.
