Columbia Water & Light receives national award for excellence
COLUMBIA, MO (April 2, 2013) - Columbia Water & Light earned the 2013 Award of Continued Excellence (ACE) from the American Public Power Association’s Demonstration of Energy & Efficiency Developments (DEED) program. The award recognizes continued commitment to the DEED program and its ideals, including support of research, development and demonstration, improving efficiency, renewable resources and support of public power.
“For more than 30 years, Columbia has been active in energy efficiency programs,” said American Public Power Association President & CEO Mark Crisson. “It has worked diligently to develop programs to promote renewable energy and energy efficiency and it has been quick to share results with other public power utilities."
Since joining DEED in 1983, Columbia has received multiple DEED grants—as well as a scholarship—and assisted its members in advancing energy efficiency and renewable energy programs. Columbia has done marketing research in the area of solar feed-in tariffs, is working on a collaborative biomass project and been a leader in Missouri in the areas of residential and commercial energy efficiency. This is Columbia’s second ACE award—having previously received the award in 2005. In 1985 the utility earned a DEED Energy Innovator Award for its Cooperative Energy Management/Conservation Office program, which was designed to assist local government management of energy.
The American Public Power Association is the Washington, D.C.-based service organization representing the nation’s more than 2,000 not-for-profit, community-owned electric utilities. The DEED program was created in 1980 and is the only research and development effort funded nationally by and for public power systems. It has funded almost $11 million in energy projects since it was created.
