Crash Critically Injures Woman

COLUMBIA, MO (April 4, 2013) - At 9:46 a.m. Thursday, April 04, 2013 the Columbia Fire Department responded to an automobile accident involving extrication at the intersection of Oakland Gravel Road and Starke Avenue.

Columbia firefighters arrived on the scene to find two vehicles involved, a dump truck and a sport utility vehicle. The extensive damage the SUV sustained trapped the female driver in the vehicle. Firefighters used hydraulic rescue tools to cut the vehicle away from the trapped driver while providing emergency medical care to her. It took approximately fifteen minutes for firefighters to free the driver from the vehicle.

The driver was the only occupant of the SUV and was transported by ground ambulance to University Hospital as a “trauma-alert,” indicating she sustained life-threatening injuries. The driver of the dump truck declined medical attention.

Two fire engines and a rescue squad responded to the incident and were on scene for approximately 45 minutes.  For details about the accident investigation, please contact the Columbia Police Department.
