Volunteers will Cleanup Columbia Saturday
COLUMBIA, MO (April 9, 2013) - The City of Columbia’s Volunteer Programs reports that more than 1,600 volunteers representing 125 groups have registered to participate in Saturday’s Cleanup Columbia event. This is the 17th annual citywide trash pickup event.
Volunteers will be along Columbia streets and trails and in streams and parks Saturday morning picking up litter. Following trash pickup, volunteers are invited to a picnic lunch sponsored by APAC-Missouri Inc. at noon at Twin Lakes Recreation Area to celebrate their efforts. Each group sets their start time for cleanup. If it rains, volunteers may postpone their pickup time.
There is still time for residents to get involved by volunteering. Those interested in participating can identify a cleanup location and pick up supplies at City Hall, 701 E. Broadway, from 3-6 p.m. on Wednesday or at Rock Quarry Park, 2002 Grindstone Parkway, from 3-6 p.m. on Thursday, 11 a.m.-5 p.m. on Friday or 7:30-9 a.m. on Saturday.
The public is encouraged to use caution while driving in Columbia on Saturday morning as volunteers may be working near roadways. Volunteers are scheduled to pick up litter on Rock Quarry Road between Stadium Boulevard and Grindstone Parkway starting at 8 a.m. and on Stark Avenue west of Brown Station Road beginning at 10 a.m. As both roads are narrow, the public is advised to use particular caution on these streets.
Cleanup Columbia is sponsored by APAC-Missouri Inc., 102.3 BXR, KFRU AM 1400, KOMU TV 8, the Mid-Missouri CW, the Columbia Daily Tribune, CenturyLink and the Sierra Club. Columbia Public Works, Columbia Parks & Recreation and the Golden K Kiwanis Club also provide in-kind support.
