BOONE COUNTY PROSECUTING ATTORNEY AND ANIMAL CONTROL  OBSERVE PREVENTION OF CRUELTY TO ANIMALS MONTH WITH IMPORTANT REMINDER

COLUMBIA, MO (April 10, 2013) - Columbia/Boone County Public Health and Human Services – Animal Control Unit and the Boone County Prosecuting Attorney’s office are observing Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Month with a reminder to residents that anonymous reports of animal abuse can be made through CrimeStoppers at 875tips.com or by calling 573-875-TIPS.

 

Because numerous studies have confirmed the correlation between animal abuse and human abuse, Animal Control and the Prosecuting Attorney’s office recognize that addressing the co-occurrence of animal and human abuse can help prevent and reduce overall community violence. Research continues to show that when a person is cruel to animals, he or she is more likely to abuse humans as well.

 

“The CrimeStoppers partnership gives us one more ’tool in the tool box’ when it comes to creating and maintaining a safe and healthy community,” said Stephanie Browning, Public Health and Human Services Director. “The partnership makes it easier for friends, family members, neighbors – anyone – to anonymously report animal abuse and potentially prevent the abuser from graduating to human abuse or from continuing to harm humans.”

 

“We believe animals should be treated humanely. In addition, it is a fact that there is a link between animal abuse and violence against humans,” said Boone County Prosecuting Attorney Dan Knight. “Individuals who abuse animals very often abuse people, particularly vulnerable people. We encourage the public to report these crimes so that appropriate actions can be taken by law enforcement.”

 

Offering anonymity sometimes means the difference between callers reporting animal abuse and not reporting it, according to Animal Control Supervisor Molly Aust. Animal Control will continue to receive tips via email at health at gocolumbiamo.com and phone at 573-449-1888. In keeping with CrimeStoppers’ mission, tips providing credible information concerning animal abuse and neglect may receive a cash reward.
