Citys annual commemorative poster unveiled
COLUMBIA, MO (August 12, 2013) - Missouri is known for its varied landscapes and dramatic skies. These two elements are present in the pastel titled “Winter Sunset” by Jerry Brown, which was selected for this year’s commemorative poster for the City of Columbia. Unveiled on Saturday, the work was selected from 137 images submitted by 24 Missouri artists through a jury process.
A native Missourian, Jerry Brown graduated from Northeast Missouri State University, now Truman State University, in Kirksville with a bachelor’s degree in art education. He earned his master’s degree in studio art from the University of Missouri Kansas City. Brown taught high school art and worked as a watercolor artist for 30 years before moving to pastels.
“Many of the skills I developed with watercolor have influenced the way I use pastels,” says Brown.
The artist is no stranger to Columbia. Brown participated in the Columbia Festival of the Arts for many years and won Best of Show in 2002.
A rugged, winter landscape and inflamed evening sky was the setting that inspired the pastel. Brown says, “I am always on the lookout for dramatic cloud formations and was fortunate to see this evening scene in the country near Lee’s Summit, Mo. There was a late winter snow covering the field and the clouds added character to the image.”
The commemorative poster was unveiled Saturday at the home of Bill and Bridgid Kinney who hosted this year’s poster party. The event is held annually as a fundraiser to support city-sponsored arts programs and services administered by the Office of Cultural Affairs.
The 2013 Columbia commemorative poster, “Winter Sunset,” can be purchased at Deck the Walls in Columbia Mall or at the city’s Office of Cultural Affairs, 300 S. Providence Road.
The city’s commemorative poster is a program of the City of Columbia Office of Cultural Affairs, in collaboration with the Columbia Daily Tribune and Deck the Walls.
