Two Car Crash Sends Seven to Hospital
COLUMBIA, MO (December 11, 2013) - At 3:15 p.m. on Wednesday, December 11, 2013 the Columbia Fire Department responded to a traffic crash near the intersection of Providence Road and Ash Street. Downtown fire crews arrived on the scene within four minutes and found a two vehicle, rear-end type accident in the westbound lanes of Ash Street, in front of 305 East Ash Street.
The accident involved a light blue Dodge minivan and a dark blue Ford Explorer. The occupant of the Ford Explorer declined medical attention. The minivan contained eight occupants. Columbia Firefighters used a hydraulic rescue tool to force open the damaged rear hatch of the minivan to access the rear seat passengers.
Seven of the minivan occupants were transported by ambulance to University Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The eighth occupant declined medical attention. Fire and EMS crews were able to care for and transport all seven patients from the scene in approximately twenty minutes.
Fire crews were on the scene for approximately thirty minutes and one westbound lane of Ash Street was closed for about forty-five minutes. Three fire engines and four ambulances responded to the incident.
The Columbia Fire Department reminds all residents that seat belts save lives. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, buckling up is the single most effective thing you can do to protect yourself in a crash.
