City snow crews begin clearing residential roadways; Transit and Trash Services

COLUMBIA, MO (February 26, 2013) - Columbia Public works plow crews, assisted by Columbia Water and Light and Columbia Parks and Recreation, have begun to clear residential roads after completing the 1st and 2nd priority roadways.

"Today's plowing operations on 1st and 2nd priority routes went very well as there was little traffic on the roads." said Public Works Director John Glascock. "We thank all of those folks who stayed off the roads while our plow crews, utility crews, and emergency service crews were out responding to this winter storm."

Crews will continue to plow and clear residential streets 24/7 with all available resources until the job is complete.

Other Public Works crews are working to clear trees and limbs from roadways so plow crews can complete their jobs. A number of trees and tree limbs have fallen due to the heavy, wet snow.

As folks begin to shovel out, they are reminded to shovel snow to the right side of their driveway as they are facing the street. While this will help, it will not entirely prevent some snow from being bladed from the street across driveways.

Columbia Solid Waste and Recycling Services will resume normal service on Wednesday and collections will be delayed one day. Tuesday collections will occur on Wednesday, Wednesday collections on Thursday, and so-forth.

Columbia Transit will resume services on Wednesday. Additional announcements will be made later today regarding transit service schedules on Wednesday.

There is the possibility of a quick burst of snow early Wednesday morning which could deposit 1-3 inches. Commuters will have slick road conditions to contend with on the Wednesday morning commute and they should plan accordingly.
