Public Works Operations Update - Tueday, February 26 at 7:00 PM
COLUMBIA, MO (February 26, 2013) - Forecast - may receive another 1-2 inches of snow overnight and into early Wednesday.
Still receiving some reports of trees and tree limbs down in roadways. We are clearing thse as they are reported.
Crews completed 1st and 2nd priority roads around 1:00 PM and have been working in residential areas since. We have plowed neighborhoods where refuse pickup will occur on Wednesday (Tuesday routes) and the Columbia Transit routes.
In an effort to plow as many residential streets as possible overnight, plow drivers will make a pass in each direction on each street and will not plow "curb to curb". This method will open lanes of traffic on residential streets so that residents can get to main roads. The second issue facing plow crews is the lack of space to push additional snow. If we push it any closer to curbs we will damage an untold number of mailboxes in the process. This heavy wet snow combined with last weeks snow means less area to push snow into.
While we do try not to push snow in front of driveways, it is often impossible not to push some snow from the street across a driveway entrance. Piling snow to the right of your drive while facing the street when clearing your drive will help.
Public Works has committed all available resources to plowing and treating roads. Additional equipment and personnel from various city departments and divisions have been pressed into service to get roads cleared as soon as possible. We continue to work 24 hours to make Columbia roads safe and passable.
Columbia Transit is scheduled to operate on all routes at regular times. Some delays may be possible and riders should monitor social media and media outlets for any schedule or route deviations.
Refuse and recycling pickup will resume on Wednesday, Routes will be delayed one day.
Thank you to everyone who have stayed off of roadways today. That has greatly assisted road crews, utility crews, and emergency services respond during this storm.
