Public Works Operations Update - Wednesday, February 27 at 7:00 PM

COLUMBIA, MO (February 27, 2013) - Forecast - may receive another dusting of snow overnight and into early Thursday.

Snow operations customer service line tonight can be reached at 573-874-7-6289.

Motorist should watch for slick spots and spots where water is pooling in the roadway. Snow pack blocks storm water inlets and melting snow tends to pool on roadway. Crews from Storm Water Utility will continue to clear those storm drains as they are identified.

Crews completed 1st and 2nd priority roads around 1:00 PM after the snow on early Wednesday morning and have been working in residential areas since. Will continue to plow overnight in residential areas with a full crew.

In an effort to plow as many residential streets as possible overnight, plow drivers will make a pass in each direction on each street and will not plow "curb to curb". This method will open lanes of traffic on residential streets so that residents can get to main roads. The second issue facing plow crews is the lack of space to push additional snow. If we push it any closer to curbs we will damage an untold number of mailboxes in the process. This heavy wet snow combined with last weeks snow means less area to push snow into.

While we do try not to push snow in front of driveways, it is often impossible not to push some snow from the street across a driveway entrance. Piling snow to the right of your drive while facing the street when clearing your drive will help.

Public Works has committed all available resources to plowing and treating roads. Additional equipment and personnel from various city departments and divisions have been pressed into service to get roads cleared as soon as possible. We continue to work 24 hours to make Columbia roads safe and passable.
