***UPDATE***Early Morning Fire Displaces Two Columbia Families
COLUMBIA, MO (January 15, 2013) -
For Immediate Release:
Early Morning Fire Displaces Two Columbia Families
***UPDATE***
The cause of the fire reported at 2214 Chapel Hill Road that occurred in the early morning hours of January 9 remains undetermined but suspicious in nature. Specifically, the occupants of the upstairs apartment, 2212 Chapel Hill Road, left the scene rapidly before fire crews arrived and items consistent with a methamphetamine lab were found in the garage attached to 2212 Chapel Hill Road which was identified as the area of origin.
Columbia Fire Department Investigators and Columbia Police Department Detectives conducted extensive interviews with those that lived in the home and their acquaintances. While most of those interviewed were cooperative, some were not. One person investigators would like to speak with has not been located.
This remains an open and active investigation. Anyone with relevant information should contact the Columbia Fire Department, Fire Marshal's Division at 573-874-7556 Monday through Friday between the hours of 8am and 5pm.
**UPDATE**
Columbia Fire Department investigators are working with Columbia Police Department Detectives on the investigation of the early morning fire at 2214 Chapel Hill Road.
As of this press release the area of origin is determined to be in the south portion of the garage. The fire cause is still under investigation.

On 01/09/2013, members of the Columbia Fire Department were dispatched, at 02:22 am, to a reported residential structure fire at 2214 Chapel Hill Road.
Fire crews arrived on the scene at 02:27 and reported smoke and fire visible from the roadway. Crews began to fight the fire and search the structure for occupants. The fire was knocked down at 02:47. While searching the structure, crews learned that the home was a multi-family dwelling with residents on the first floor and residents occupying the basement. It was also reported that the residents on the first floor woke up the residents in the basement and both groups evacuated the structure, got into a vehicle, and left the scene prior to the arrival of the Fire Department.
Assistant Fire Marshal Tim Bach investigated the fire and the exact cause of the fire is under investigation and a damage estimate of $ 50,000.00 dollars has been issued and there were no injuries reported as a result of the fire.
The Columbia Fire Department wants to remind residents that working smoke alarms do save lives. Test your smoke alarms at least once a month by pressing the test button. Replace smoke alarm batteries at least once a year. Replace smoke alarms every 10 years. To ensure adequate protection, place smoke alarms in every sleeping room, and in a common area on every floor. If you cannot afford a smoke alarm, call the Columbia Fire Department at 573-874-7556 to schedule an appointment to have free smoke alarms installed. For residences who need assistance in checking their smoke alarms, they can also contact the Columbia Fire Department.
