Public Service Announcement Viewed Over 1 Million Times

COLUMBIA, MO (July 25, 2013) - The Columbia Fire Department, working with The City Channel, produced a light hearted public service announcement endorsing home fire sprinklers.  In just over forty hours this PSA received over one million views on Facebook.

Columbia Fire Chief Chuck Witt stated 'We are very excited about the public reaction to this video.  It has far exceeded our expectations and been extremely effective in raising awareness of home fire sprinklers'.

Fire in the home poses one of the biggest threats to our community.  U.S. fire departments responded to 371,000 structure fires per year during the five-year-period of 2006-2010.  These fires caused an estimated average of 2,600 civilian fire deaths, 12,900 civilian injuries, $7.2 billion in direct property damage and 25,600 fire fighter injuries at the fireground per year.

Extensive research has revealed that fire sprinklers save lives, protect property and benefit the environment.  Home fire sprinklers can also offset the increased dangers posed by homes built with lightweight construction and create a safer fire environment for occupants and fire fighters.

Research shows that sprinklers reduce civilian fire deaths by up to 80% and reduce direct property damage by fire up to 71%.
