Fire hydrant testing begins this week
COLUMBIA, MO (June 12, 2013) - The Columbia Fire Department will begin their annual fire hydrant testing program on Thursday, June 13. This will ensure the hydrants have adequate water flow and pressure for fire fighting purposes. Customers might notice reduced water pressure when a hydrant is flushed nearby. Sediment in the pipes can also be stirred up which can temporarily discolor the water.
If a customer notices discolored water they should avoid doing laundry. The water will usually return to a normal color after the water has run for a few minutes. The water will continue to be safe for consumption. For those with commercial fire alarm systems, they might be temporarily affected by the low pressure.
This is a cooperative program between the Fire Department and Columbia Water & Light. If customers experience prolonged problems with their water, Columbia Water & Light can be contacted by calling 874-6229 or 875-2555 after hours.
