Utility Room Fire Causes $15,000 Damage

COLUMBIA, MO (June 19, 2013) - At 8:37 a.m. on Wednesday, June 19, 2013, the Columbia Fire Department responded to a reported residential structure fire at 2705 Squire Circle, near the intersection of Squire Circle and White Gate Drive.  Columbia Firefighters arrived on the scene four minutes later to find a two-story home with smoke coming from the residence.

Firefighters located the fire in a basement utility room and extinguished the fire in approximately ten minutes. Fire damage was contained to the basement utility room. The remainder of the home sustained light smoke damage. Crews remained on the scene for more than an hour removing smoke from the building. Because the home’s electric service had to be shut off for firefighting operations, the home will be uninhabitable until utility service is restored.

The occupants of the rental home, an adult female and four children were alerted to the fire when the smoke alarm began sounding. The occupants then left the house and called 9-1-1.

Columbia Fire Investigators have not yet determined the cause of the fire and it remains under investigation. Damage is estimated at $15,000. The occupants did not have renter’s insurance.  No pets were injured in the fire.

The Columbia Fire Department wants to remind residents that working smoke alarms do save lives. Test your smoke alarms at least once a month by pressing the test button. Replace smoke alarm batteries at least once a year. Replace smoke alarms every 10 years. To ensure adequate protection, place smoke alarms in every sleeping room, and in a common area on every floor.
