Columbia lands on Forbes list

COLUMBIA, MO (March 1, 2013) - Columbia, Mo., has landed on Forbes Magazine’s top 25 “Best Places to Retire” 2013 list: http://www.forbes.com/pictures/mjf45glmi/time-for-a-move.

In a companion article www.forbes.com/sites/williampbarrett/2013/02/25/the-best-places-to-retire-in-2013/, Forbes contributer William P. Barrett explains that the list was compiled by crunching “data on more than 400 cities from every state, looking at factors ranging from living costs and taxes to crime to the availability of doctors and the opportunity to stay active with outdoor exercise and volunteer work.”

Forbes factored in assessment by other organizations, including Bicycling Magazine’s take on trails and VolunteeringInAmerica.org’s measurements on community volunteer opportunities.

City Manager Mike Matthes said that the Forbes listing is an indication that the city’s strategic plan has focused on the right issues - customer service, financial health, growth management, health, safety and well-being, infrastructure and workforce.

“We have a mission to run city government in a way that helps Columbia be the best place to live, work, learn and play,” Matthes said. “As we continue to focus on what’s important to the community, I believe Columbia will continue to grow as a community where people and business want to be.”
