Electric load drops by 1% during Earth Hour

COLUMBIA, MO (March 25, 2013) - The Columbia electric load dropped by two megawatts during Earth Hour on March 23 from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. This represents a little over 1% of the electric load. The two megawatts of electricity is equivalent to the amount of power used by almost 80 homes in Columbia on an average day.

The goal of Earth Hour is for people to show their support for protecting the earth. During this hour participants turn off lights and non-essential electronics simultaneously around the world. The electric consumption during Earth Hour was evaluated by Columbia Water & Light staff and compared to the usage several days before and the day after.

Past reductions in electric loads during Earth Hour were as follows:

2012 – 2 megawatt reduction

2011 - 2.5 megawatt reduction

2010 - 1.58 megawatt reduction

2009 - 1.27 megawatt reduction

2008 - 1.72 megawatt reduction
