Fire in Vacant House Results in $6,000 Damage

COLUMBIA, MO (May 14, 2013) - At 9:17 a.m. Tuesday, May 14, 2013, the Columbia Fire Department responded to a reported house on fire at 2113 Pleasant Way in northeast Columbia. Multiple 9-1-1 callers reported smoke coming from the basement of the residence.

Columbia firefighters arrived on the scene at 9:21 a.m. to find gray smoke coming from the basement of the single-story house with a walkout basement. Firefighters entered the basement door of the home and, using a single hose line, extinguished what appeared to be large piles of burning trash within five minutes.

The approximately 1100 square foot, three bedroom home is rental property owned by Zumwalt Properties of Ashland, Missouri. The home was vacant at the time of the fire and had no utility services. The only structural damage to the building was smoke damage throughout the main level living areas and minor smoke and heat damage in the unfinished basement.  Damage is estimated at $6,000.

Columbia Fire Department fire investigators are working to determine an origin and cause of the fire. At the time of this release a cause has not been determined. Fire investigators and Columbia Police are interviewing witnesses who stated they saw activity around the house shortly before the fire was discovered.  “While no specific cause has been ruled out, based on information from witnesses, our investigators believed it was appropriate to involve law enforcement as the investigation proceeds” said Columbia Fire Captain John Metz. Should relevant additional information become available, a follow-up news release will be issued.

Three fire engines, a ladder truck, and a rescue squad responded to the incident. Fire crews remained on the scene for more than two hours conducting overhaul to make sure the fire was extinguished.
