Extrication Accident Sends Three to Hospital

COLUMBIA, MO (May 17, 2013) - At 9:06 a.m. Friday, May 17, 2013, the Columbia Fire Department responded to a report of a car accident with unknown injuries at 100 Business Loop 70 east, the entrance to Burger King Restaurant.

Columbia Firefighters arrived on the scene four minutes later and upgraded the incident to an extrication accident, indicating someone was pinned in a vehicle. This brought additional personnel, an engine company and a rescue truck to the scene.  Firefighters found there were three vehicles involved and three adult patients, a male and two females. Two patients were able to be removed from the vehicles without difficulty.  The third patient, an adult female, had to be extricated from the vehicle. Firefighters used hydraulic rescue tools to remove both right-side passenger doors, and the center post separating them, to remove the victim.  The extrication process took approximately twenty minutes.  All three patients were transported by ambulances as non-trauma alerts to the University Hospital.

Eastbound Business Loop 70 between Garth Avenue and Providence Road was closed for approximately one hour due to the incident. For information regarding the cause of the crash, please contact the Columbia Police Department.

The Columbia Fire Department reminds all residents that seat belts save lives. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, buckling up is the single most effective thing you can do to protect yourself in a crash.
