PUBLIC HEALTH & HUMAN SERVICES VACCINATES 7,561 BOONE COUNTY CHILDREN THROUGH SCHOOL BASED CLINICS

COLUMBIA, MO (November 19, 2013) - (COLUMBIA, MO) – The Columbia/Boone County Department of Public Health and Human Services vaccinated 7,561, or 41 percent of enrolled Boone County elementary and middle school children during the school based flu clinics held October 1, 2013 through November 6, 2013.

Thanks to generous support from the University of Missouri Children’s Hospital and the David B. Lichtenstein Foundation, public health nurses were able to conduct flu clinics in participating Boone County elementary and middle schools, providing free seasonal flu vaccine (injectable and FluMist®).

In addition to the school based flu clinics, funding and support from the previously mentioned community organizations allowed the Department to vaccinate over 1,000 children in the clinic located at 1005 W. Worley in Columbia and other outreach efforts.  Free flu vaccine (injectable and FluMist®) is still available for all children age six months through 18 years.

As a reminder, flu season is not over. Adults and children are invited to be vaccinated Monday – Friday from 8 am – 4:30 p.m. at our clinic.  No appointment is needed; walk-ins are welcome. For adults ages 19 and older, cost of the vaccine is $25 and a wide variety of insurance plans are accepted. Stop in today and get vaccinated before the holidays, as the vaccine can take up to two weeks to fully protect against influenza.
