World AIDS Day is December 1 and was established by the World Health Organization in 1988. It is an opportunity for people worldwide to unite in the fight against HIV, show their support those living with HIV, and to honor those who have died as a result of HIV. According to the World Health Organization, at the end of 2012, approximately 35.3 million people were living with HIV worldwide. In addition, an estimated 2.3 million people were newly infected with the virus in 2012. But there is hope. There are several ways to prevent HIV transmissions including safe sex practices and regular testing.
