Scaffold Collapse Sends Two to Hospital

COLUMBIA, MO (October 9, 2013) - At 8:39 a.m. Wednesday, October 09, 2013 the Columbia Fire Department responded to 1700 Forum Boulevard, the Katy Place Apartments, for an accident involving a construction crew. Based on information from the 9-1-1 caller that two people had fallen off a roof and sustained serious injuries, the fire shift commander requested an additional fire engine and ambulance respond.

Columbia firefighters arrived on the scene at 8:44 a.m. and found that two construction workers had fallen approximately 30 feet and sustained injuries. The workers appeared to have been working on siding near the gable peak on the south side of Building 14 when their ladders and scaffolding collapsed. It is not known why the equipment collapsed. The building is a two-story, ten unit apartment building.

Columbia firefighters and University Hospital paramedics provided emergency medical care to the two adult male patients. The men were then transported to University Hospital as “Trauma Alerts” with potentially serious injuries.

Two fire engines, two ambulances, and a support vehicle responded to the emergency. Units were on scene for just under an hour.
