Afternoon Fire in Home Under Renovation

COLUMBIA, MO (September 13, 2013) - For Immediate Release:

Afternoon Fire in Home Under Renovation 

 

On 09/13/2013, members of the Columbia Fire Department were dispatched, at 1:47 pm, to a reported fire on the second floor of 604 Florence Ave. Crews arrived on the scene at 1:51 pm and they found smoke and flames showing from the second story of the residence. The fire was knocked down by 1:59 and the structure was searched and no one was found inside the residence. The home, owned by Columbia resident Nancy Carper, was not occupied at the time of the fire as a major remodeling project was underway. 

 

Assistant Fire Marshal Tim Bach investigated the fire and stated that the fire primarily confined to a stairwell and the upper loft area of the residence. The cause of the fire was attributed to the use of a heat gun while striping paint. Lt Bach issued a preliminary damage estimate of $40,000.00, there were no injuries associated with this incident, and smoke detectors were sounding upon the arrival of the crews.  

 

The Columbia Fire Department wants to remind residents that working smoke alarms do save lives. Test your smoke alarms at least once a month by pressing the test button. Replace smoke alarm batteries at least once a year. Replace smoke alarms every 10 years. To ensure adequate protection, place smoke alarms in every sleeping room, and in a common area on every floor. If you cannot afford a smoke alarm, call the Columbia Fire Department at 573-874-7556 to schedule an appointment to have free smoke alarms installed. For residences who need assistance in checking their smoke alarms, they can also contact the Columbia Fire Department.
