Gas Leak on University Avenue
COLUMBIA, MO (September 27, 2013) - At 8:17am units from the Columbia Fire Department were dispatched to 1314 University Avenue for a reported gas leak. Ameren UE was also requested to respond.
Fire department personnel arrived on the scene less than five minutes later and identified a residential gas line had been struck by construction workers in the back of 1314 University Avenue and was actively leaking gas.
Crews immediately shut down University Avenue between South College Avenue and South Williams Street. Simultaneously, as a precautionary measure, fire crews went door-to-door in the cordoned off area and asked residents to evacuate their homes until the air quality could be evaluated.
Ameren UE arrived on the scene and capped off the damaged line within thirty minutes. Representatives from Ameren then went door-to-door to measure air quality using specialized gas detection equipment. Gas was detected in the target address. Crews opened windows and doors using natural ventilation to return air quality to an acceptable level. Crews remain on the scene as of this press release ensuring the home at 1314 University Avenue is adequately ventilated. Adjacent homes were determined to be safe.
