Arbor Day tree giveaway will be held Saturday
COLUMBIA, MO (April 21, 2014) - Compost samples will also be given away!
City of Columbia TreeKeeper volunteers and Columbia Parks & Recreation will honor Arbor Day with a tree giveaway this Saturday, April 26. One thousand bare-root seedlings will be given away beginning at 8 a.m. at the parking lot of the ARC, 1701 West Ash. The giveaway will continue until all trees are gone.
TreeKeeper volunteers and Parks & Recreation Department forestry staff will be on hand to distribute the seedlings to the public and answer any tree questions. Thirteen species are available including shortleaf pine, black walnut, pecan, sycamore, tulip poplar, bald cypress, swamp white oak, flowering dogwood, persimmon, eastern redbud, elderberry, serviceberry and pawpaw. Members of the public may take two trees of different species.
Free 8-ounce samples of “Columbia’s Own” compost from the Public Works Department will also be provided during the tree giveaway. "Columbia's Own" compost is manufactured at the city’s landfill and contains yard waste and post-consumer waste from local grocery stores. The compost is available to purchase locally at Menards and HyVee stores.
TreeKeeper volunteers participate in a course on tree identification, planting, pruning and other management topics and are then asked to volunteer on tree projects in Columbia’s city parks and along trails and rights of way. In 2013, 52 TreeKeepers gave 334 hours of service to the city valued at more than $7,300.
The next TreeKeepers class will begin in early 2015. To find out more about the tree giveaway or volunteering with the City of Columbia, call Volunteer Programs at 874-7499 or visit www.GoColumbiaMo.com.
