City to host Short Street parking garage and public art dedication

COLUMBIA, MO (April 23, 2014) - The Office of Cultural Affairs and Public Works Department are hosting a dedication ceremony for the city’s Short Street parking garage and the latest Percent for Art project. The public is invited to attend the dedication at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 29, at the Short Street parking garage located at 1110 East Walnut St.

The Percent for Art project at the garage, titled “Tidal Murmur,” is a stainless steel sculpture by artist Beth Nybeck. “The artwork is meant to embody the energy and movement that takes place in our environments - the visual and the invisible,” says Nybeck. “The sculpture is also meant to create a movement and energy within the viewers, calling them to walk around, through and under the artwork.”

Columbia's Percent for Art program, established in 1997, requires that 1 percent of total construction costs for eligible new and renovation projects be set aside for site-specific public art. The Percent for Art project at the Short Street parking garage is the 12th commission to be completed.

For more information, contact the city’s Office of Cultural Affairs at 573-874-6387.
